The Four Sizes of M2M SIM Cards

1FF

The oldest and largest M2M SIM cards are around the size of a credit card. These are known as Full-Size, ‘1FF’, or ‘1st form factor’, and they were the first of the SIM cards to appear on the market in 1991. It has since been primarily phased out in favour of smaller SIMs.

The Four Sizes of M2M SIM Cards

2FF (Mini-SIMs)

The industry standard M2M SIM cards nowadays are known as  ‘Mini-SIMs’ or ‘2FF’ and are commonly referred to as a ‘regular’ or ‘standard’ SIM. They were introduced in 1996 and measure in at 25mm x 15mm. These M2M SIMs are most likely to be used within large scale industrial IoT devices such as vehicles (for tracking), payment terminals or vending machines.

3FF (Micro-SIMs)

For small-to-medium portable or mobile IoT devices such as GPS trackers and health monitors, the ‘Micro-SIM’ or ‘3FF’ is an ideal choice. These M2M SIM cards were introduced in 2003 and measure in at 15mm x 12mm. While they are half the size of Mini M2M SIM cards, the Micro-SIM has the same contact area, with a smaller plastic surrounding. Many consumers may be familiar with the Micro-SIM  as it  has been widely adopted by smartphones and tablets.

4FF (Nano SIMs)

The  smallest of the bunch is the ‘Nano SIM’ or ‘4FF’, which was introduced in 2011. These tiny M2M SIM cards measure in at just 12.3mm x 8.8mm, a whopping 40% smaller than the Micro-SIM. Once again though, the actual contact area of these M2M SIMs is still the same and it essentially has no plastic surrounding, though the SIM card itself is thinner. Due to this, the Micro-SIM is not the greatest choice if you’re going to use it in any kind of harsh environment or application, as it has very little protection. It is, however, the pick of the bunch of M2M SIM options for small IoT devices such as wearables and mobile payment devices.

Which M2M SIM Card Is Best For You?

In addition to differing sizes,  M2M SIM cards will have varying abilities to withstand certain environments and applications. Some M2M SIMs will fare better in harsher environmental conditions, be able to operate at different temperatures and have a longer life expectancy. Such factors should be taken into great consideration when selecting suitable M2M SIMs for specific applications.

While you may be wondering which size M2M SIM cards you need to order, take comfort in the fact that the ‘Multi-Cut’ SIM card exists. This is a large credit sized card that essentially pops your M2M SIMs out into the required size, making it universally adaptable to your requirements.

SIM Cards, Without the Card!

And just when you thought that you’d read about all the different sizes and variations of M2M SIM cards that there could possibly be, the team at Luner pull the ‘eSIM’, (or ‘embedded SIM’), out of the bag. A revolutionary concept that was introduced in 2010, the eSIM measures in at a minuscule 6mm x 5mm and is designed to be  soldered directly onto the circuit board during the manufacturing of the IoT device. This means that in some instances users essentially have no need to worry about the size of their M2M SIM cards and how to implement them, as the devices come ready to connect.
